Hey bceg, just go by your haynes or chilton manual and you should be fine.

I replaced the water pump and timing belt while i was at it. The car runs great except for idle surge which i got right before the headgasket went.

Non MLS head gasket FTMFL. Sorry man. Have you ever seen what happens when you get water on cardboard? how it expands and falls apart. Thats basically what happens with those kinda head gaskets. Hope it lasts for you. almost all of the cars i have done that have bad head gaskets have those gaskets on them. so watch your temp gauge.

As for the idle surge, this usually occurs when an air bubble is stuck in the IAC, bleed the air out of your coolant system. make sure the engine is COLD remove the radiator cap, start the engine, and let it get up to temp, it might kinda make a mess as the air bubbles all come out. let it run a while until no more bubbles are coming out and you should be good.
