Is the D17A2 really a bad motor?

Well I was going to get the car cosmetically done before I started on the engine, and had plans to put a b18 or b20 in the car with a b16 head. While doing some hunting I came across a clean, low mileage D17A2 for $500, and that comes with everything I need for the swap, minus the ECU...maybe, I'll have to check.

I did some searching, and I mostly just see people bashing the engine. So is it not a good engine? It has 57 more hp and 37 higher in torque, and only a little higher than what it'd cost to replace a newer D15B8 that I was thinking about doing while I'm still traveling up to 1,000 miles in one day for work just because of the gas mileage.

Let me know guys. $500 isn't a huge loss, but I still find it nice to know what kind of engine I'm getting.

I don't have any personal experience with this motor but I've only heard bad. I don't think I've ever heard any good.

it's from the 01+ civics, so it's going to be more work to swap. Most of the difficulty is going to be electrical.

x2
the electrical is gonna be a biotch
not only is it obd2, there are so many more sensors
no cap and rotor and plug wires... your better off gettin a d16 or d15

i have had some experience with a d17a2 in my dads o5 civic ex
and its a kick ass motor, but its almost the same specs as my old d16y8 i had the only diff is the d17 has 3 more ft lbs

so id say go with a d16 or 15 :thumb:

Well thanks a lot guys, now I know not to buy that engine. I'll probably just wait for the b18/b20 vtec swap unless I find a killer deal on a d16.

It's an excellent motor but it has more in common with the K series than the D series. Dead head fuel system, coil on plug, OBD2b, different mounts etc. Not worth putting into any Civic older than 01.

It's def the best stock D series motor. My wife's 01 EX gets 40+ mpg and it makes about the same power as the previous SOHC VTEC's.

But for an all-out power build, the D16A6 is king of the D series followed by the Z6.
