#98620 I am running a stock cam gear on my D16z6. I'm finally getting around to putting my t3 turbo on & hopefully getting it tuned in spring. Goal is 250-275 whp. How essential is an adj cam gear to tuning a SOHC turbo engine?

I'm looking at the skunk2:

I don't wanna spend the $112 if it isn't absolutely needed.

#98897 Hey there. It would not be completly necessary, however it would make your power goals much more atainable.

Plus it looks cool as shit. :thumb:

#98922 not necessary.
adjustable cam gears are to compensate for the change in distance from camshaft to crankshaft.
as in milling the head or decking the block.
you still want your valves closed for compression and combustion and open for intake and exhaust.
some tuners like to move the 'power band' up or down to suit a specific application, and an adjustable cam gear will allow you to do that to a minor extent.

#98928 On a SOHC, you can't adjust the valve overlap like you can a DOHC, so no, not worth it. Don't get me wrong, with proper tuning you can pick up some hp, but only at the cost of hp in a different part of the power band. And for the cost of the part + dyno time...

Valve overlap is not a good thing when you're turbocharged.

Get an adjustable cam gear when you get an aftermarket cam.
