Turbo and Supercharger discussion
By Matt.M
#99674 Well I was really happy last night, thinking I just found a KILLER deal on a k24 swap for my civic, but someone busted my bubble with a list of everything I'd need for it to work and it coming to a few grand just for parts outside of the tranny/engine so that's not going to happen on this 'budget' build.

So I'm back to trying to decide on a b16a or a b18b1. I've always been a fan of torque, I own a z28, and I've always said 'HP sells cars, Torque wins races'. Well, that's in the domestic market, I'm not sure what's best in cars that only weigh about 2k pounds.

Which of the two, on average, would be quicker? Which one would gain more from a turbo?

I've looked for information on this, so if there's any site you have dealing with this, it would be great to have.

Thanks!

#99676 no matter whether we're talking domestics or imports... there is no replacement for displacement ;-)

I can't remember which head flows better between those two. The B16's are gonna be Vtec DOHC motors whereas the B18B1 is non-vtec. Dunno which one is a selling point for you but me persoanlly I'd want the newer technology of the Vtec motor. There's prolly more aftermarket support for the B16's as well.

#99699 Okay. So I was looking around, and found this:

So after I got a stock b16a engine, what else would I need for the turbo? Is there a place to buy it all as a set, or would I be better to get it separate?

#99707 There are many many turbo kits on the market. They range from $3000 to $5000 or so.

If I was going to turbo a B series, I would just get an OBD1 B18B non VTEC and put some turbo application cams in it.

#99708 the B18b1 has low compression which makes it a great candidate for boost. ls with 8lbs of boost = fast daily driver.

So I can't get a reliable turbo set up for $1,500 or less counting the labor/tuning/ect.? I'm saving up for college and I don't know if $3,000 is worth a turbo for what I'll be using the car for anyways.

Really, I'm only looking for a small turbo that spools up quickly for low end torque. Top end isn't a concern.

#99784 Yes you can, you just have to shop around and piece your turbo kit together, ie: buy the separate parts and it might come down to being cheaper. If you are looking for a small turbo that isn't very laggy and good power output, My personal favorite the "Disco Potato" GT28RS (a bit pricey) but Great, if not you are going to be looking for a T3/T4 Variation with possibly a .30 A/R.

Errrrr. Just read it again before I actually posted and you said including Labor and TUNING. Ummmmm sorry you "May" be able to piece the turbo kit together and read and learn how to install it properly, BuuuuuuuT Tuning is the Key to everything. You really can't skip on tuning it can make or brake everything even if you spend 10,000 on a hyper mega super great turbo kit. It's all in the tuning.
