What do you want from your car? Low end power? Top end power? a compromise of the two?
A smaller turbo would help with response and good low end power but suffer top end when the turbo cannot breathe any harder.
A larger turbo would help with top end power but suffer with lag low end.
A medium size turbo would be a compromise of the two
There is another choice of whether you want ball bearing or journal bearing turbos.
Ball bearings have less friction and have better rotation allowing for faster responses. It also has coolant ports to cool the turbo reducing the strain on the oil to cool and lubricate the turbo. It is expensive though
Journal bearings use oil to cool and lubricate the turbo. Oil breakdown is much faster with this type of bearing but it is alot cheaper. Turbo cooldown time is meant for these bearings due to oil possibly choking in the turbo if cooled down improperly.
Your HP goal and how you want that power delivered will ultimately choose the turbo for you.
Personally I like a daily driver car with some grunt. I opt for a medium sized turbo with minimal turbo lag and good top end. A GT2871R (ball bearing) was my choice. I had good top end as well as midrange power. The ball bearing minimized my turbo lag so it was simialr to a smaller journal bearing turbo like a T3.
