Turbo and Supercharger discussion
By Boods
#186981 Hey guys,

Stock D15b7 motor, stock internals, stock everything.

Looking for a simplish way to make about 150-200 odd horses which would be doable by someone who is competant but not skilled in cars [Could replace head gasket but not do an engine swap etc. :P]

Would it be worth it to just bolt on an ebay special turbo & go from there? Or go for a minime swap? What about a supercharger setup?

Would any of this be safe & not stupid expensive for a daily fast driver with maybe one or 2 trips to the strip...

Keep in mind the budget is VERY low... =\

X2

Very low budgets are not turbo friendly.

Although to answer your question yes you could boost it and I'd try to stay under 200 whp. And if you are going to boost it, do yourself a favor and get ARP rod bolts ... it'll be worth the extra money (most stock rod failures on the d15s are from the rod bolts stretching IIRC).

Also if you are thinking of going turbo keep this in mind.

Cheap ... reliable ... fast

Pick two.

#187018 Get yourself an XSpower kit, ARP headbolts, a few gauges and someone who can tune the ECU.

One of Hollands best ECU tuner had an d15b7 turbo el cheapo @190 HP as a daily!

If you make sure the engine is at the right temp and you have an GOOD ECU tune then you can have al lot of fun for the lowest amount of ponds

#187099 save your money for a while, buy a decent turbo setup, slap it on that b7 and rape the crap out of it till it gives up like a cheap hooker then swap it out for a JDM D15b. you won't regret it.

Make a good friend that knows civics and then just buy a motor to swap. I dont really think the d15b7 is a good motor to swap.

But the cheap, reliable, fast thing really is true.

RELIABLE - FAST - CHEAP
you can pick only two.
fast and cheap isn't reliable
reliable and cheap isn't fast
reliable and fast isn't cheap

#187166 Hhmm,

thinking I'm going to put off a turbo for the time being then, but does anyone have any ideas how i can grab a few extra horses out of my d15 just to make it a bit more interesting to drive & preferably a fair amount faster [say 40 odd horses?]

Going for "Fast + cheap" option, so naturally I thought an Ebay turbo, but you guys have any other suggestions?

#187167 mate there is an ej2 coupe on civiclife.net with the b7 and a 9 psi turbo it runs 197bhp. still not the way to go on a budget, avoid the ebay kits, my mate got oe and they are made from low quality components. read teal_dx's turbo sticky just source the parts yourself :)

You could do a mini me ... swap on a z6 head. I did that and it did net me nearly 40 WHP. Another thing that will make it more fun is to swap in the EX transmission.

You really aren't going to make the b7 much more powerful on the cheap. You can do I/H/E ... like with any engine ... to get a few extra ponies out of it. But in all reality getting serious extra power out of any engine is going to cost money.

Another good "budget" set up is to mill the head and swap in a new cam (stg2 from exospeed, or bisi, or maybe a delta 272), and a z6 IM, and get it tuned. I know of a guy getting close to 130whp on a setup like that.

You've got to pay to play.

#187194 you don't have to have a ton of horsepower to have a fun car. build up the suspension(bushing kit, sway bars, tower bars) and you can have a car to out handle others.

but one of the quickest ways to turn a D series around is to (as said above) do a tranny swap. get an EX/SI tranny and youll have an entirely different car

Exactly my car is a ton of fun and I'm only getting about 120 - 130 whp, but it's got a bit of a suspension build up. Honestly on a very small budget I/H/E and a decent suspension set up is probably going to be the best way to spend your money. Look at this thread for suggestions on a good suspension build on a budget http://civic-eg.com/viewtopic.php?t=14008.

Also to get a bit more out of the b7 without spending a lot of cash swap in the a6 cam (slightly more agressive) and the z6 IM (flows better) ... those two mods plus the EX tranny and I/H/E has been known to outperform a stock z6.

#190692 How well would vitara pistons work for a turboed b7? Wats a good option for some connecting rods to go along with that?

Currently there aren't any forged rods for the USDM d15s, however there is a guy who is, theoretically, working on some.

Ok that's not entirely true, there is a company out of hungary that is making a custom length forged rod for the d15b7 which is designed for running vitara pistons in that engine. But the site is in a different language and I'm not sure how legitimate it is, or how much shipping would be to the US.

The options for the d15b7 are VERY limited. You can probably safely get 180 - 220 whp out of the set up without the rods giving out. The other option is the run the rods out of a d15z1 (from a VX civic) which will make the vitaras stick out of the hole by 0.02", this works if you run a slightly thicker head gasket. The z1 rods are longer and a little stronger than the b7 rods ... I know this setup has been used reliably in the past.

Another option is to source a JDM D15B VTEC crank, there are custom length forged rods made for vitara pistons available for that application. JDM D15B VTEC cranks are slightly different than the USDM counterpart ... larger rod journals, same size mains.

#199264 do a mini me swap then boost it but make sure you change the rods cause the d15 rods are like toothpicks you can get a turbo kit on ebay for like 500$ just make sure you keep up the maintance on it and dont race all the time and you should be fine.
