cooling problem 95 si coupe with greddy kit

- Thu Jan 01, 2009 2:15 am #86393 Hi guys, i have a 95 si with a bolt on greddy turbo kit, i have a intercooler and b.o.v. and its only boosting 6psi.
the problem that i have is that when you boost it for awhile ex. driving on the highway, the overflow tank gets filled with coolant and overflows, when the cools down it doesn't suck back the coolant to the rad.
this causes it to heat up bec. there no coolant in the rad. my oil is not milky, and there are no visible leaks with the hoses or rad. I've also blead the system many times to get rid of excess air in the system. what wrong with it?????

Depending on how long it could make for some wicked heat.

- Thu Jan 01, 2009 5:05 pm #86430 i'm using a fail safe thermostat, so when it fails, it fails in the open position so i really doubt that it could be the cause. it happenens whenever i drive the car hard for a couple of minutes, does this happen to anyone else whos got a turbo set up?

Humm weird.
The only other 2 things I would thing would be air in the system or your rad is clogged.

what kind of turbo are you running? If its an oil and water turbo and the hot side is seizing then its gonna get glowing red, and this glowing red is gonna heat that coolent real quick like... Even under 1psi, the turbine would still try and spin under the seized bearings causing huge amounts of friction since turbo's spin at hundreds of thousands of rpm's.. At that rate it does not take alot to heat the water. If you drive it hard, boost it, it heats.. when you get out of the throttle and the turbo stops trying to work then it cools off, and quick because the hot gases are just exiting the turbo and the intercooler is cooling the air running back into your motor... take your turbo off and check it, you might be seeing early signs of turbo failure..

- Sat Jan 10, 2009 6:05 am #87995 get a '00 si radiator from a parts store (advance auto) there readyRAD radiators are dual core better cooling. I would change to a 180-160 deg, f/ thermostat which advance sells as an optional temp thermo. and a mugen radiator fan sensor, you could also get a slim better flowing fan....that would take care of your problem.
