#93256 how can any one question the strength of carbon fiber? it's 25% stronger than steel and 35% lighter than aluminum. I know cause I work with carbon fiber. we make all the carbon fiber parts for corvette Z06/ZR1, ford gt500 KR, and the doge viper A.C.R.

#93263 Strength isn't everything.

It may be strong but it's exceedingly brittle as anyone who's had / has got a carbon lip will point out.

#93277 If I may say, a carbon fiber lip Isn't a structural piece, It mainly serves a cosmetic purpose, so the # of carbon fiber layers are limited in the "lip", you also have to think of the many applications that carbon fiber is used for, exp: formula1 race car chassises are made entirely of carbon fiber and are made to withstand huge impact forces, so your "lip" for example is not made to protect anything in case of a accident, also a carbon fiber hood is not a durable as a OEM hood because of it's layers. I guarantee that if you tap those wheels with ... say your ring on your hand it would sound similar to aluminum, tile or steel even. If you haven't seen/held/felt a structural piece of carbon fiber than maybe i'll have to ship you a small piece so you can have a new found trust in the potential of carbon fiber. just saying

#93319 i don't understand why that person didn't just go ahead with the carbon fiber rims....i mean 90% of the rest of the car is carbon fiber. i bet it could fly.

As I said, strength isn't everything.

Carbon Fibre just shatters when it's impacted with enough force which is dangerous particularly with a wheel.

I'm sure if you watch F1 you saw Kubica's crash at Montreal a couple of years ago where it just threw shards of carbon fibre everywhere.

It doesn't matter how it's made, the fact remains it will still be brittle, it's an inherent property of the material that can't be removed short of overlaying it onto a metal surface.

I know it's strong... I did a fairly length experiment on the benefits of carbon fibre in my final year at A level and conducted a lot of research on it. The fact remains that it does not bend or deform it just shatters with an appropriate impact strength which is incredibly dangerous.

#93406 ^ ^ TU-SHAY, well played my friend!

but think of the force that it would require to "shatter" that wheel!!! it's gotta be an-assload. then think of the same amount of force on a regular aluminum wheel. they both would be toast.

#93415 True, but consider that a forged wheel will bend rather than break.

Almost any cast wheel fail along a fracture line and crack with sufficient force, which might only be reversing into kerb a little hard, I'd dread to think what would happen if you did the same to the carbon wheel.

I can't comment on it's structure per se but I doubt it would chip or bend.

#93657 bend or break your still screwed but barbon fiber it's going to bend or break from hit a pothole. as other rims will.

#93722 Sorry but I'm an OEM kind of guy, Ferrari red is the TRUE Ferrari colour. Always has been, always will be.

Also, not that it matters but Ferrari red costs more.

#98831 I think those carbon rims look sick.
I also was pretty fond of the carbon toilet seat on that site!
Pretty sweet.
