What is this and is it bad it's broken?

on the passanger's side, the thing is nearly cracked in two.

And I'm not too sure where this next one goes, but there isn't a drivetrain subforum so I'm posting it here. I've been hearing a shrill squeeking noise from what appears to be my front driver's side brake. Yesterday I was under The Beast just looking around, and I decided to check out the brake. I noticed that the boot around the axle nearest the wheel was torn pretty bad. it also looked to me as if the damned axle was sloping downwars, a subtle bending motion. It would explain why my tire is wearing excessively on the inside. heres a pic.

could my front cambers need replacing as well? also, Would it be same to just drive it like it is for the time being, say, six months or so, and just keep adding grease to the torn boot?

replace the boot.

the boot keeps grease inside and keeps the cv joint greased so its wont wear out and dirt will stay out.

if you keep driving with a torn boot your cv joint will wear and you need to replace it too.

yup..specially the cv boot..thats a bi*tch to replace without the right tools..

i'd prefer doing the boot instead of the bushing....

like above lol all you need is a lug nut to take off the fastening for the outer cvjoint, a 17mm socket to undo the lower ball joint so you can flex the hub and a hammer to knock off the joint, not that many tools dude loll no major tools really :) and yes replace it. Boot's cost nothing much at all.

They are both rather easy. Just like Graham said, you just need a hammer for the trailing arm bushing. As for the axle, they are cheap enough that you can just go get a new axle and not have to worry about getting that grease all over the place by just replacing the boot.

I have replaced just the boot on axles, in the end it is easier to just buy a new axle. takes less time and is much easier & cleaner. You already have dirt in your CV joint after driving with the boot torn, so it's life has already been shortened. don't invest any more time/$$ into your current axle. Use it as a core exchange for your new one at autozone , napa, etc.

Check to see which option is cheaper.
If replacements turn out to be a cheaper and a longer lasting option than fair enough.

If it's cheaper to replace the joint than just do that.
If your a bit of an enthusiast then I don't see a better reason for you to get your hands dirty :D Getting grease on your hands is easily removed with a bit of soap + water + a towel lol

Its not about getting dirty at this point. If the boot has been ripped for a while, the grease could have come out and not done its job. Dirt can get in and destroy the joint. It could be at the point were its just no good anymore.

I have the same torn boot :lol: . Leavin mine alone though, gotta get different axels anyway :hehe:
